VintageWatercooleds.com Technotes :: ATS Technote: 16v Rear Antenna

Fuba antenna! all our old 8v cars came with the fender antenna, while 16v brothers get that neat roof antenna. They make the VW look so good! well - here's how you install one in your roof. This technote is with a MK2 Scirocco, but it should apply to any A1 or A2.

First Step is to remove your trunk seal. The headliner is wrapped around the edge, under the seal. You can see the stitching there. Don't worry too much about the stitching. You can redo it with a needle and the same color thread, or you can replace the headliner while you're here.
Once your stitches are out, peal the edging inside the car and you will find the 3 or 4 (can't remember anymore) hooks that hold the headliner wire to the body of the car, push upwards to disengage the bar and liner from the hooks.
This shows the headliner wire hanging down. This gives us the room we need to pass the antenna wire through. It's a good time

Measure the roof (find the centerline) Being alone I used masking take to hold the take on the edge of the roof to measure it completely. Just measure the distance and divide that by two. In our case that was 19" to the centerline from the rain gutters.

Then measure 3" from the back of the roof - to make sure the hatch doesn't hit the antenna when It opens.

Measure the shaft of your antenna. Some differ, aftermarket ones and VW OEM ones are all different. Drill a hole as close to the measured size as possible. In our case, we drilled a 14mm hole for it. We used a 6mm starter hole then finished with the 14mm drill bit.

Test the fit of the antenna.

The wire needs to be run from the antenna along the side of the liner to the driver's side B-pillar. Take the weather strip out of the door to grab the wire. When running the wire down the B-pillar, we used duct tape to hold it down.

Put the lining back, and put the weather strip back on, running the wire down with the seal, working your way down.
Take the plastic door sill off, and run the wire under that, along the edge. Then run the wire up into the dash, and connect it to your radio. That's it.

Fished product - with the car freshly painted Titan Red.
