VintageWatercooleds.com Technotes :: Car Alarm Installation

Viper 650XV Installation

Way back, I had a real nice stereo. Then I moved to Denver, it was promptly stolen. So - instead I went and bought a car alarm. I went to a certain store. You know which one I'm taking about. The Install was $1. Let me tell you - you get what you pay for!! These shops roll the install cost of the alarm into overly inflated prices of their products.

Halfway through, they called me and said that they couldn't put in door locks. I said that I didn't want an alarm at all if they couldn't. So what did they do? They chopped the living hell out of my doors to get them in.

Well. Now I have a newer Scirocco. I wanted the alarm in that. So I took the dash out, and out came the alarm...

Square 1 - Took the alarm out of the old car.

I just traced all the wires. This is deceptively simple. You get the door switch signal from a brown wire that comes out iof the door jam. You get the ignition connection from a thin black wire off of the ignition switch. To put in the starter kill - I cut the big Red/Black wire from the ignition switch and put it through the relay. I cut it very close to the firewall, up under the dash. It's impossible to get to without pulling the dash. I cut the door locks into the door much the same way as the shop did. I later found this great technote on DriversFound.com. Well - that's the way to do it!!

I connected the flashing lights to a white/green wire that came out of the headlight switch to make it flash the parking lights. I mounted the alarm's siren in the rain tray, right next to the ECU and the wiper linkage. The wires go through a rubber boot to go down to the alarm, which is mounted to the underside of the rain tray from inside the car. I'm also working on a way to make the car honk with the alarm as well.

As for the switch and LED - mount them absolutely anywhere. They come with extremely long wires, so you can put them wherever. The Blue LED I have is so bright, that neighbors occasionally knock on the door to tell me I have a light on in the car.

Another interesting trick is running a loop of wire through the stereo's wiring harness, so that when it is cut, it triggers the alarm. I connected the power to the alarm directly from the battery with a fuse. The wire runs along the top of the battery and then along the side of the car in a wire loom so that it would be impossible to cut from below the car. I have the shock sensor mounted to the firewall right next to the hood hinge, so that if someone cuts the hood release cable from under the car, the alarm will go off.

More FAQ text here soon. I'll explain all this...

Okay - Here's the real stuff. These wires should be similar for any Directed Electronics Brands car alarms. Clifford, Viper, Python, Valet, and all them.
